Water Safety Tips for River/Moving Water - (07/03/2013)

• Avoid being taken downstream in an uncontrolled manner. Even shallow water, if movingfast enough, can knock a swimmer over and carry he or she away. • The shallower or narrower the river bed, the faster the water must flowthrough, and vice versa. It is important to throw a stick in the water to judgeflow speed. Swimmers must avoid water moving faster than they can swim.• Rivers in the spring canbe very risky. When snow is in the process of melting, tree branches, sticksand various other items may be floating in the water. It is important to takenote of this.• Also in the spring, water levels may rise. If a shore that is normallyvisible is covered in water, please be cautious. Branches may be found lyingunderneath the water’s surface.• When swimming, keep a lookout for boats, fishing line and jetskiis. It isvital that a swimmer is seen in the water. It is important to move to a widerarea if there is not much room for a traveler to pass by.• Many beaches on a river may have sand hills. Sand is sometimes dredged out ofa river so that boats can pass by without hitting the bottom. Oftentimes, waterdrops off fast in these areas, leading to danger and even death.• Most importantly, if YOUfeel uncomfortable in a specific area, trust your instincts and move to abetter location. - more
